Overview
The Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) web-based training system is a standalone system and does not have pre-loaded NU IDs. Therefore, the first time you take EHS web-based training you will need to provide your NU ID, name, department, and email.
NOTE: This training is not configured to be taken on a mobile phone, tablet or notebook. They are not supported, therefore if you try to take EHS online training using a mobile phone/tablet/notebook and experience issues, discontinue and take on a PC or Mac. The Internet Explorer (IE) browser is no longer supported. Use Edge now if you had been using IE.
All EHS web-based courses currently available are listed below with the entry links on the left. On the right information is provided as to who should take the course, approximate time to complete the training module, and links to supplemental materials (if applicable).
To take EHS web-based training you will need your my.UNL or myred login and password as well as your NU ID number. Upon successful completion of your training an email will be sent to the email address you provide so enter your email address carefully. If you do not provide an "@unl.edu" or "@huskers.unl.edu" email, the confirmation might go into your email's junk/spam folder. A confirmation email is sent ONLY to those who pass the course and furnish a valid email address. To ensure you have a record, you may wish to print the Confirmation Page showing successful completion.

Steps to Take EHS Web-Based Training
Find your training course below and click the link in the table.
- You will be prompted to log in with your My.UNL or myred account credentials. You may use your NU ID as your login or what you use to access University of Nebraska-Lincoln email, Canvas, etc. Example: if your email is jdoe2@unl.edu, your login is jdoe2. The password required is the password you set up when you claimed your NU ID through TrueU and use for UNL email, Canvas, etc.
- NOTE: If this is your first time taking EHS web-based training you should review the instructions for new trainees here. Have your NUID available as that is the required "University ID Number" for web registration. After review of the instructional PDF go back to https://ehs.unl.edu/web-based-training. Read directions 3 through 12 below. After reading the directions scroll down to select the course you wish to take. When you select a course through the Training Menu, you will be redirected farther down the web-based training page to the "Session" column. Click the Session Name in the lefthand column.
- After the university login, returning trainees will have their name prepopulated in the First Name, Last Name boxes. You will be taken directly to the start of the training you selected. If you wish to take a different course, select CANCEL and you will be taken to a Course Selection Page.
- On the Course Selection Page you will see the EHS web-based training courses to the right with the courses separated into sections similar to what is listed in the Training Needs Assessment document.
- Scroll to the training you need to take and click "Start."
- You can make the content take up more of your screen by selecting the box with arrows at the top of the first section. Review the training content.
- Navigate through the training by using the "Next" and "Previous" buttons or use keyboard forward/back arrows.
- After you have taken the training you must take the quiz and pass with 80% or better for successful completion (unless otherwise noted).
- Click SAVE AS COMPLETE after you make sure your email address listed as “Confirmation Email” is correct (no typos). If your email address is not correct, enter the correct email address and check the “Update Email Address” box to the right of the email entry field.
- If you FAIL you can click SAVE & EXIT to return to the Trainee Information page and retake the same training.
- If you PASS you can click CANCEL to return to the Trainee Information page to take another course.
- If you are using a shared computer, when you are finished with training, from the Course selection screen, click "Logout" in upper right so someone else may take training.
Access/Review Your Training Record
Returning trainees may review their EHS training record.
- Login to the training portal using your university credentials.
- Under the Trainee Information heading, click the blue Training Records button.
Training Needed
At a minimum, employees must also complete the following EHS training: Core-Injury and Illness Prevention Plan and Core-Emergency Preparedness. If working with chemicals you must take either Chemical Safety (4-unit training) or the Chemical Safety training targeted toward certain worker types. When certain hazards are associated with tasks the employee performs, other EHS related training is required. Examples include: potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens, respirator use, forklift operation, ionizing radiation, confined space entry, etc. Additional guidance is available in the EHS document Training Needs Assessment for EHS-Related Topics.

Core - Injury and Illness Prevention Plan (IIPP) |
Required by all staff and faculty once during employment at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The Injury and Illness Prevention Plan module is required for all employees who get a paycheck from the university. There is a quiz following this module. Core - Emergency Preparedness Training |

Asbestos Awareness |
This course should be taken upon initial employment and annually thereafter by all employees who conduct custodial and light maintenance activities and operations that, if done improperly, could disturb Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM). NOTE: This module is designed as an "awareness level" training only. It is not intended to provide sufficient instruction for the credentials needed to conduct any regulated ACM-disturbing activity. There is a quiz following this module. You must pass with an 80% score to complete the module successfully. If your score is less than 80% your registration will not be recorded. This training is required for all University of Nebraska-Lincoln employees working
with biological materials subject to the university's Biosafety Guidelines. This training does not address practices and
procedures pertaining to specific biosafety containment levels. Workers at all biological containment levels must first
successfully complete this course before taking the additional required training sequentially: Biosafety 101 (for persons who
work at Biosafety Level 1 containment or higher), and Biosafety 201 (for persons who work at Biosafety Level 2). Work at
Biosafety Level 3 requires both Biosafety 101 and Biosafety 201 as well as additional didactic and hands-on
training. This module requires approximately 45-60 minutes to complete.

This training is required for all University of Nebraska-Lincoln employees prior to
initiating or conducting research with biological materials requiring Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) containment or higher, AFTER
successfully completing Biosafety Research Compliance and Biosafety 101. |
Biosafety Refresher |
This training is designed as an annual refresher for any University of Nebraska-Lincoln employees conducting work, other than work covered under OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, subject to UNL's Biosafety Guidelines. Bloodborne Pathogen specific refresher training is not covered in this module. Prerequisites for this course are prior completion of Biosafety Research Compliance and Biosafety 101. This course will be updated every fall for October Biosafety and Security month. There is a quiz following this module. You must pass with an 80% score to complete the module successfully. If your score is less than 80% your registration will not be recorded. You need to review the material and re-take the quiz until you pass in order for your session to be recorded. Bloodborne Pathogens for Laboratory Workers (including HIV/HBV/HCV) |
Required annually by lab workers, clinicians, and human subject researchers reasonably anticipated to have occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens through their job tasks or research. All Custodial Services, Housing, and Nebraska Union employees determined to have occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens through their job tasks should take the targeted "Bloodborne Pathogens for Custodial Services, Housing, and Nebraska Unions." All non-laboratory workers such as first-aid responders, athletic trainers, childcare workers, and police officers determined to have occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens through their job tasks should take the targeted "Bloodborne Pathogens for Non-Laboratory Workers." Required by all employees who work with or could be exposed to hazardous chemicals upon assignment to at-risk tasks. Employees in the following areas should take the chemical and general safety training targeted toward their work tasks in lieu of these 4 modules: Custodial Services, Housing Custodial Operations, Housing Dining Services, Maintenance Operations, and Visual & Performing Arts. This module consists of four units. ALL FOUR UNITS must be successfully completed to meet the requirement. There is a quiz following each unit. You must pass all four unit quizzes with an 80% score to complete this training module successfully. If your score is less than 80% on any unit, your registration will not be recorded for that unit. This "general awareness" training should be taken by any University of Nebraska-Lincoln employee who has access to areas that are or contain confined spaces. Employees such as, but not limited to maintenance & custodial employees, electricians, utility workers, groundskeepers, agricultural employees, and employees who work with confined animals in areas with deep pit systems. There is a quiz following this module. You must pass with an 80% score to complete the module successfully. If your score is less than 80% your registration will not be recorded. This training is required initially and recurrently every three years for all University of Nebraska-Lincoln employees who prepare and ship packages that contain Biological Substances, Category B, and Patient Specimens (human/animal) with or without Dry Ice and/or Dangerous Goods in Excepted Quantities. Dry Ice and/or Dangerous Goods in Excepted Quantities training must be successfully completed before taking this training.
If you intend to also ship Infectious Substances, Category A, you must successfully complete the
DOT/IATA Infectious Substances, Category A training AFTER taking this training. There is a quiz following this module. You must pass with an 80% score to complete the module successfully. This recurrent training is required every three years for all University of Nebraska-Lincoln employees who have previously participated in the instructor-led format of this course, which qualified them to prepare and ship packages containing Infectious Substances, Category A, with or without Dry Ice and/or Dangerous Goods in Excepted Quantities. Persons who ship materials classified as Infectious Substances, Category A, and materials classified as Biological Substances, Category B, or Patient Specimens (human/animal) must complete all three modules, with this training being taken last. There is a quiz following this module. You must pass with an 80% score to complete the module successfully. If your score is less than 80% your registration will not be recorded. You need to review the material and re-take the quiz until you pass in order for your session to be recorded. This module requires approximately 30 minutes to complete.

Electrical Hazard & Awareness Training for Qualified Workers |
This training is required by workers who are or may be exposed to energized electrical conductors or circuit parts 50 volts to ground or greater and are assigned tasks/functions within any of the following three levels of qualified electrical worker: Controls, HVAC, and Motor Technicians; Licensed Electricians; or Utility Electricians. This training is required upon initial assignment and must be repeated every three years. Persons for whom this training is required shall also read, understand, and adhere to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's written Electrical Safety Program to the extent that the program elements apply to their assigned work tasks. There is a quiz following this module. You must pass with an 80% score to complete the module successfully. If your score is less than 80% your registration will not be recorded. Facility, Utility, and Grounds Maintenance Operations: Chemical and General Safety |
Required for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln building system maintenance, housing facility maintenance,
utility (Husker Energy & Power), and grounds workers. This training provides information on chemical safety and general
hazard awareness. |
Fire Extinguisher Training |
Required of employees who may opt to use a fire extinquisher. Prior to taking this training you should have completed the "Core-Emergency Preparedness" training, a pre-requisite to this course. This course may be taken as a stand-alone unit or as the first part of a two-part training session. Once you have completed the web-based training portion, you may participate in a supplementary hands-on training session. General Electrical Safety Awareness |
This training module is not specific to any particular class of worker at the University of
Nebraska-Lincoln and in fact may be of interest to anyone since electrical shocks in the home account for thousands
of injuries and deaths each year. There is a quiz following this module. You must pass with an 80% score to complete the module successfully. Hearing Conservation Program Training |
Required upon assignment of all employees who are exposed to occupational noise levels in excess of OSHA's Action Limit, regardless of the number of days of exposure per year. There is a quiz following this module. You must pass with an 80% score to complete the module successfully. If your score is less than 80% your registration will not be recorded. A variety of laboratory specific training sessions that were originally offered as part of the Laboratory Safety Colloquium Series are available for online review. Some topics may be applicable beyond a laboratory setting.

Laser Safety Training |
This training is required of any University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) affiliated person planning to work with Class 3B or Class 4 devices in a research setting. Persons affiliated with UNL wishing to possess and/or use Class 3B or Class 4 lasers in research must be authorized by the Laser Safety Committee. The committee will grant such authorization only to persons who meet the required credentials of an Authorized User (AU) or other trained person who is working with an AU. Part of those credentials require completion of this module. There is a quiz following this module. You must pass with an 80% score to complete the module successfully. If your score is less than 80% your registration will not be recorded. You need to review the material and re-take the quiz until you pass in order for your session to be recorded.
NOTE: To fulfill requirements, a hands-on practical training by the AU or their designee is required. |
Livestock Squeeze Chute Safety |
This training is required for any UNL employee or student operating livestock squeeze chutes.
This module takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. |
Lockout/Tagout (LO/TO) for Machines & Equipment |
Required of all employees who operate, service, or repair equipment/machines that are associated with hazardous
energy which must be controlled with LO/TO procedures/devices during maintenance, service, or repair.

Mobile Aerial Lift Training |
Required of all University of Nebraska-Lincoln employees who operate any type of university owned or rented mobile aerial platform/lift prior to hands-on instruction for the particular machine(s) to be operated. This includes lifts such as scissor lifts, vehicle-mounted booms, articulating lifts and other manlifts whether they are manual or self-propelled. There is a quiz following this module. You must pass with an 80% score to complete the module successfully. If your score is less than 80% your registration will not be recorded. You need to review the material and re-take the quiz until you pass in order for your session to be recorded. This module requires approximately 45 minutes to complete.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) |
OSHA requires employers to provide employees with PPE when they are exposed to hazards that are not fully controlled through application of engineering or work practice (administrative) controls. The employer is responsible to assess hazards, select appropriate PPE, and provide training to employees using PPE. This training is appropriate for persons who are responsible to select and provide PPE to employees, as well as employees who are required to wear PPE. This training does not cover the following PPE, which is subject to specific EHS programs: respirators, hearing protection, PPE for protection against bloodborne pathogens and biological agents, and personal fall arrest systems. There is a quiz following this module. You must pass with an 80% score to complete the module successfully. If your score is less than 80% your registration will not be recorded. Portable Ladder Safety |
Training is recommended for any University of Nebraska-Lincoln employee who uses a ladder in the course of their employment and may be useful for all employees since ladder use in the home is common. There is a quiz following this module. You must pass with an 80% score to complete the module successfully. If your score is less than 80% your registration will not be recorded. You need to review the material and re-take the quiz until you pass in order for your session to be recorded. This module requires approximately 45 minutes to complete.

Powered Industrial Truck Initial Training |
Required of all University of Nebraska-Lincoln employees who operate forklifts or other Powered Industrial Trucks (PITs). Examples of these trucks would be sit down riders, stand up riders or walk behinds, powered (electric) pallet jacks, order pickers and telehandlers. There is a quiz following this module. You must pass with an 80% score to complete the module successfully. If your score is less than 80% your registration will not be recorded. You need to review the material and re-take the quiz until you pass in order for your session to be recorded. NOTE: To earn university PIT Operator Credentials you MUST also successfully complete an on-site evaluation of driving compentency, described within this formal training as “practical training” and “individual evaluation.” Consult your supervisor to determine the person designated in your area/department/facility to conduct the individual evaluation. Radiation Safety Basic Training |
Anyone planning to use radioactive materials or radiation-producing devices at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
must have certain credentials. Workers planning any use of radioactive materials or radiation-producing devices must begin

Radiation Safety Open-Source Training |
This training is required of any person planning to work with open-source radioactive material at the
University of Nebraska-Lincoln. This module supplements the module titled "Radiation Safety Basic

Radiation Safety Training for Gauge Users |
This training is required of any University of Nebraska-Lincoln-affiliated person who wishes to work with moisture gauges on or off university property. This module supplements the module titled "Radiation Safety Basic Training" which should be completed prior to taking this module. NOTE: To fulfill requirements, Gauge Users also have to complete a practical training with the Authorized User for the gauge they plan to use. There is a quiz following this module. You must pass with an 80% score to complete the module successfully. If your score is less than 80% your registration will not be recorded. You need to review the material and re-take the quiz until you pass in order for your session to be recorded. This module requires approximately 60 minutes to complete.

Radiation Safety Training for Non-Healing Arts X-Ray Users |
This training is required of any University of Nebraska-Lincoln-affiliated person who wishes to
work with radiation-generating devices that are not used in healing arts. This module supplements the module titled "Radiation
Safety Basic Training" which should be completed prior to taking this module.

Radiation Safety Annual Refresher Training |
Required by all staff and faculty who work with radioactive materials or ionizing radiation generating equipment. All required annual refresher training is web-based and may be accessed by clicking the link to the left. Sign in and select the specific training you are required to take.

Respiratory Protection Program Training |
Required upon assignment for University of Nebraska-Lincoln workers who are required to wear a respirator and therefore enrolled in the university's Respiratory Protection Program (RPP). University workers who voluntarily use respirators but are not required to do so because exposures are below occupational limits are encouraged to complete this training. Anyone with knowledge of existing or planned operations that may present a respiratory hazard, particularly supervisors, must notify EHS before workers use any type of respirator. NOTE: To fulfill requirements, a worker will need current Medical Qualification and to complete annual Practical Training (Fit Test) for a specific assigned respirator. There is a quiz following this module. You must pass with an 80% score to complete the module successfully. If your score is less than 80% your registration will not be recorded. You need to review the material and re-take the quiz until you pass in order for your session to be recorded. This module requires approximately 45 minutes to complete.

Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures (SPCC) Training |
Required annually of all employees with responsibilities related to maintenance or operation of oil storage devices at certain University of Nebraska-Lincoln facilities where large quantities of oil/fuel are transferred or stored. There is a quiz following this module. You must pass with an 80% score to complete the module successfully. If your score is less than 80% your registration will not be recorded. You need to review the material and re-take the quiz until you pass in order for your session to be recorded. This module requires approximately 45 minutes to complete.

Stormwater Annual Refresher Training |
Required annually for all University of Nebraska-Lincoln employees that have been identified as having assigned duties which could negatively impact stormwater quality, or for university employees that have been identified as being in a position to recognize potential situations that could negatively impact stormwater quality. Complete of the initial Stormwater Awareness Training is a prerequisite for this refresher training. There is a quiz following this module. You must pass with an 80% score to complete the module successfully. If your score is less than 80% your registration will not be recorded. Stormwater Awareness - Initial Training |
Required upon assignment for all University of Nebraska-Lincoln employees at high risk facilities that are likely to have assigned duties that could negatively impact stormwater quality, and for those employees who, during the course of their normal job duties, are likely to be in a position to recognize potential situations that are or could negatively impact stormwater quality, particularly certain maintenance and utilities employees.
