Overview

There is visual evidence of improper disposal (e.g., trash, drain, evaporation, etc.)

When conducting an audit always look in

  • Trash cans – bottles with liquid still in them, rags, lamps, batteries, cylinders, aerosol cans, unexposed autoclave tape, etc.
  • Sinks – discolored areas from dumping of acids, bases, stains, etc.
  • Hoods – Liquids in dishes or beakers left to evaporate.

For the most part, this checklist item is fairly straight-forward to evaluate. Simply look for evidence of improper disposal. Look in trash cans. Observe sinks for staining. Be cognizant of intentional evaporation, but only when the purpose is for disposal. If you observe a suspicious condition, question the laboratory staff. Cite this item if you determine that improper disposal has or is being practiced and advise laboratory staff to immediately cease the practice.
