Improper sash height is also a citable deficiency. The certified sash height should be marked on the side of the hood. If you observe a fume hood that is being actively used above the marked sash height, notify the user and cite this item. If the certified sash height is not marked on the hood, cite this item and indicate BSM as the responsible party and contact the Facilities Service Desk to initiate a service request.

Some hoods have horizontal sashes and these should not be used in a wide open state either. The sash is designed to protect the user and should be between the user and the chemicals/experiment.

In addition, fume hoods are energy hogs and operating the fume hood with the sash above the certified height uses more energy than when it is closed or at the proper height.

One hood can use as much energy as 3-5 homes!
