Overview
Perchloric Acid Fume Hood
- Built with stainless steel internal surfaces (including the work surface)
- Wash-down system of water spray nozzles dispersed throughout the hood.
- When heated, perchloric acid vaporizes and condenses on hood, duct and fan components.
Another type of fume hood that you may encounter, although rarely, is a Perchloric Acid Fume Hood. A special fume hood is needed for heated perchloric acid reactions because perchloric acid vapors can react with hood gaskets, greases, and other collected materials to form explosive perchloric salts and esters. A perchloric acid fume hood has stainless steel surfaces which enhances cleanability and a water wash-down system that removes any explosive compounds that might have formed on the internal surfaces.
Perchloric acid fume hoods are discussed again later under item VEN02.
