Overview
- Various styles & types
- May use to lift heavy or awkward items.
Powered industrial trucks are sometimes referred to as PITs, lift trucks or forklifts. They are used in all types of material handling situations and vary in size and style. If they are mechanically powered, then they are likely subject to certain OSHA rules, which among other things require operator qualification. Earthmoving equipment is not subject to the OSHA PIT standards. You’re not likely to find a PIT in a laboratory, but if you would encounter one elsewhere on campus bring it to the attention of the assigned Specialist. It would be helpful if you could supply a brand name (Hyster, Caterpillar, Mobilift, etc.) along with a photo and the location.
If you observe obvious problems, such as overloading of the equipment, use of unsafe lifting devices attached to the forks, horseplay, blocking emergency exits or equipment, property damage or use in areas that could create a hazard (e.g., gas powered unit operated indoors, unit operated where flammable vapors might accumulate, etc.), make notes and inform the assigned EHS staff person for additional follow-up. Discuss the situation observed with your survey reviewer and the EHS staff person responsible for the PIT program to determine if anything should be cited under this checklist item.
