Overview

Note: Not the same thing as a POWER tool!

  • Ramset or Hilti
  • Mostly found in construction settings

Explosive (Powder) actuated tools are NOT the same thing as a POWER tool. Employees using them may commonly refer to them by their brand name such as a “Ramset” or “Hilti”. These tools may resemble a pneumatic nail gun but they use a small chemical propellant charge like firearm ammunition instead of air from a hose and are more powerful than pneumatic nail gun. A .22 Short cartridge is commonly used. These tools need to be treated with the same respect as handling a gun. They are most commonly found in a construction setting attaching framework to concrete slabs or block walls. You’re not likely to find them in a laboratory, but if you would encounter them elsewhere on campus or as part of your waste management duties, bring it to the attention of the assigned Specialist.
