Overview
Electrical cords and/or plugs are not protected from damage and/or are not in good repair.
This checklist item applies to all types of flexible cords and plugs, whether an extension cord, equipment cord, or other type of flexible cord. They need to kept in good condition and protected. They should be inspected frequently by the room occupant and if damaged they should be removed from service until they can be repaired or replaced.
In Exhibit A, the cord is stapled to the ceiling tile and the wall and this is an improper use of an extension cord because it is used in lieu of permanent wiring.
The cords should be protected from damage for example, walking on them, rolling equipment over them, stapling through them, running them through wall holes or over ceiling tiles, under doors, etc.
Exhibit B shows a cord bridge being used to protect wires.
Exhibit C shows what can happen to a cord by using the cord to pull it out from the wall which resulted in separating the insulation and exposing the internal wiring. It is always best to grasp the plug to remove it from the receptacle.
