Overview
- Can look similar to propane
- Acetylene is the most common
Cylinders for dissolved gases will resemble those for compressed gases or larger cylinders for propane. Note the variability in the container shape, valving, valve protection and caps. The cylinders second and fifth from the right have valve protection. There is a steel collar welded to the top of the cylinder.
Acetylene is the most common chemical of this compressed gas type on campus.
Of the types of cylinders, all of these must be stored and used upright. In the case of acetylene, it is dissolved in acetone in a porous matrix to keep it from detonating. If the cylinder is on its side, acetone will settle in the matrix against the valve and be discharged when the cylinder valve is opened.
Next we’ll review the handling, storage, and use requirements that apply to gases under pressure.
