Overview

Note the differences: rated versus un-rated cabinets in the images

Note the “FLAMMABLE KEEP FIRE AWAY” labeled cabinet in the image provided. That is a rated cabinet. Manufacturers are required to label flammable liquids cabinets in this manner. Also note the cabinets directly to the right labeled "Acid Storage." These are not rated for flammable liquids. The rated cabinet has self-closing doors and other design features while the other cabinets just have door pulls. Also, the other cabinets appear to be ventilated.

In general, venting of flammable liquids cabinets is discouraged, and the bungs in the side of the cabinet should be securely in place. There are some situations where venting is done, but it must be done in a specific manner. This usually means stainless steel hard ductwork with make up (supply) air and separate exhaust venting. Venting usually is reserved for the storage of flammable chemicals that are very odiferous or lachrymators. If you find a ventilated flammable liquids cabinet, take pictures and make notes so that you can discuss this with a Senior Specialist.
