BSL-2 laboratories must be identified with proper signage. At UNL, the signage varies in appearance depending on whether the biological agents are human, animal, or plant pathogens. Regardless, the sign will indicate the containment level of the laboratory; it will detail procedures for entry and exit from the laboratory; and provide contact information for persons knowledgeable about the laboratory.

Exhibit A is for a laboratory using human pathogens, including zoonotic agents. The sign is orange in color and bears the Universal Biohazard Symbol. At UNL, use of the Universal Biohazard Symbol is reserved for human pathogens. For security reasons, we also do not indicate the actual agent in use.

Exhibit B and C are for a Animal facilities using non-zoonotic animal pathogens (B) and for a plant growth area housing transgenic plants, plant pathogens or plant pests (C). For additional information refer to the EHS SOP, Biohazard Door Postings.

Cite this item if you visit a lab designated as BSL-2 and it does not have an appropriate sign at the lab entrance. When this item is cited, it should be referred to the BSO for creation of the appropriate biohazard signage. The signage will then be sent through Campus Mail to the PI for posting or delivered in person.
