Overview

A sign incorporating the universal biohazard symbol is not posted at the lab entrance when human materials or pathogens are present.

Access to BSL-2 laboratories must be restricted to authorized personnel while work is being conducted. Authorized personnel means only those individuals that have the requisite skills and training to properly and safely handle the biological agents used in the laboratory. The laboratory must have lockable doors to facilitate access restrictions. Part of this is covered under BIO06 as good biosecurity practices, but additional hazard signage beyond the standard door posting with GHS symbols is required for labs with human materials and/or human pathogens. These signs will only be found on labs that have been designated as BSL-2.

Some animal facilities and plant growth areas (greenhouses) on campus will have similar restricted access/hazard signs posted due to the presence of animal pathogens or plant pathogens and pests. In general, you will not be visiting these areas, but this information is provided for awareness purposes.
