Overview

Radiation-producing machines are not allowed in rooms that are not approved for use.

Any in-use radiation-producing machine is specifically registered with the State of Nebraska. The state registration is specific to the machine and its location. Therefore, such machines cannot be located in rooms that have not been approved for this use (similar to a RAM permit). Examples of such machines include electron microscopes, XPS (X-ray Photospectrometers), XRDs (X-ray diffraction) and XRFs (X-ray fluorescents). These machines tend to be large, so these are not readily relocated. XRDs and XRFs will have signage indicating x-ray production when energized. Electron microscopes and XPSs will not have any signage indicating that the machine produces radiation.

However, as shown in the photos provided, benchtop units do exist and purchasing/receipt of such devices is not controlled through the EHS office. So, it is possible to purchase such a machine without EHS knowledge. If you find such a device in an unauthorized room, confirm with the occupant that it is indeed a radiation-producing machine and notify the ARSO or RSO.
