For the purposes of this training, you should be alert to the presence of clean benches and biosafety cabinets as possible indicators of unauthorized work being conducted in a chemical laboratory or pathogen work being conducted in a BSL-1 lab. Unauthorized work is addressed in the “Administrative and Other Safety Concerns” portion of the checklist.
Biosafety Containment devices such as biosafety cabinets and sealed centrifuge rotors are important safety measures in labs that handle infectious materials. If equipment is marked with a biohazard symbol, ask the lab occupants if they used sealed rotors or safety cups when centrifuging infectious materials. If they don’t use sealed rotors, mark this item.
Operation of biosafety cabinets in Biosafety Level 1 and 2 labs is covered in the Ventilated Cabinets section
You will not be assigned to conduct audits of biosafety level 3 laboratories.
