This checklist item may be cited if a laboratory possesses chemicals that carry an explosive pictogram and they have no blast shielding or blast shield(s) is/are damaged. A blast shield is also appropriate for very energetic chemical reactions, but you’re not likely to know that the lab is engaged in this type of work. If you encounter this situation, inquire and record the quantity of explosives used and consult with a Senior Specialist about the need for a blast shield.
If you see a blast shield, inquire as to the work being conducted. Often, this will lead you to whether checklist item OTH03 written safety procedure are lacking or incomplete) should be cited.
