Overview
Sharps are not properly managed. Contaminated sharps are not appropriately decontaminated and/or collected for disposal.
Many items fall within the classification of “sharps.” In a laboratory setting, the most common “sharps” are broken glassware, disposable glass pipettes, razor blades or knives, and needles. We are concerned about proper handling of sharps because of the risk of laceration or skin penetration.
The hazard is even greater if the sharp is contaminated with an infectious agent, radioactive material or chemical.
Proper management applies to both use and disposal.
