Overview

When testing the eyewash, do the following:

  • Let it run for 30-60 seconds
  • Make sure the water runs clear
  • Make sure the spray is uniform from all nozzles
  • Make sure there is sufficient pressure to displace the eyecup caps.

When feasible, do your own independent test of the eyewash while conducting your audit. Before doing so, make sure there is a floor drain or catch pan. Some eyewash stations are not plumbed and there is no floor drain. You shouldn’t test these. In general, you should not test the style that is mounted in a wall cavity because they may require manual emptying of the reservoir- and are not plumbed to a drain.

For eyewashes that can not be readily tested, note this and the reason on the survey. If it is due to an electrical hazard, this should be cited as a checklist item GFCI deficiency, ELE06. EHS is compiling a list for BSM on their locations so that they can be upgraded.

If you are able to test the eyewash, you should look for the performance items listed on this slide. If the eyewash station is not functioning properly, cite as deficiency.
