Overview

Biohazardous waste is not properly stored prior to disposal

Under this item you will also cite excessive biohazard waste that is waiting to be autoclaved. Sometimes there is a reason for this, such as a malfunctioning autoclave, so be sure to ask about it before citing this. It should still be cited, even if the autoclave is not working, but it will be the BSO’s discretion as to severity of citation.

Biohazard bags that are waiting to be autoclaved are puffy. They should also be closed loosely, not left open like the middle picture. After autoclaving, they will look like the air has been sucked out and the autoclave tape will have stripes. Autoclave bags should also be placed in opaque/dark trash bags for disposal in the regular trash. If you see bags like the picture on the right, ask the lab occupants about how the bag is disposed.

Additionally, if you see overflowing or completely full biohazard bags, cite this item and explain that bags should only be filled 3/4 full.
