Overview
Ideally, the kit should be assembled in a container (we suggest a 5 gal. bucket) (labeled as “Bio Spill Kit”) At a minimum, the kit should contain:
- Several biohazard bags.
- Disinfectant – Concentrated bleach to prepare a fresh solution or other appropriate disinfectant.
- Inert absorbing material (e.g., diatomaceous earth, HyDri, kitty litter, absorbent pads, paper towels).
- A small dustpan and hand brush or tongs.
- Personal protective equipment, including several pairs of latex gloves, goggles, face shield, face masks, coveralls, and shoe coverings.
- A copy of the EHS SOP Spill and Exposure Response for Biohazardous Materials or a lab created spill procedure or a spill kit poster that has the QR code for this SOP.
Finally, the disinfectant in the kit should not be expired, and if it is bleach, the bottle should have received/manufacture and expiration dates. Commercial bleach solutions should be disposed of within 1 year of the date of manufacture. When manufacture dates cannot be determined a receipt date is acceptable.
