Overview
- Pathogenic bacteria or viruses
- Human cell lines
- Human blood
- Non-human primate blood or cells
Before you start looking through the lab, go over the Bio Permit Data Summary document with the PI or lab manager and verify that everything is accurate, if it is not correct, make a note of it on the printed document and cite it under OTH01 in the Admin & Other Safety Concern section of the Safety & Compliance Survey (SCS) checklist. Ask if there have been any changes in use of recombinant/synthetic nucleic acids, plasmids, or microorganisms, if they have started or plan to use human materials, human pathogens, or non-human primate materials.
Generally, research that occurs in labs designated as BSL-1 involves non-pathogenic microorganisms. Any recombinant nucleic acid work is low risk and does not involve genes from human pathogens. The determination of BSL-1 containment is made by the BSO and the IBC.
If you observe any human materials (e.g. blood, serum, tissues, body fluids or cell culture), biohazard symbols other than on biohazard waste containers/bags, or any material not listed in the permit data summary, make a note of it and report back to the BSO (Biosafety Officer).
You are not expected to evaluate ongoing work in BSL-2 labs for non-compliance. You should only verify materials on the Bio-permit with PIs or lab staff in a BSL-2 lab.
